Modern servo and radar gauges have improved considerably.
They hardly need any HTG (Hydrostatic Tank Gauging system) or HIMS (Hybrid Inventory Management System, a combination of hydrostatic gauging and a level gauge) is to be preferred if mass or volume is the desired measurement for inventory and custody transfer.
Do you know that Tank gauging history started with manual gauging (see picture) and being used until today?
Manual gauging, using a graduated diptape or dipstick, is still used worldwide as verification for gauge performance.
However, accurate hand dipping is a difficult task, particularly with high winds, cold weather, during night time or when special protection equipment has to be used. Almost all disadvantage caused by human errors.
Another disadvantage is that employees are often not allowed to be on a tank because of safety regulations, resulting in costly, long waiting times.
Whatever method is used, a high degree of reliability and accuracy is of paramount importance when the data is used for inventory control or custody transfer purposes.
